shimoda, located at the southern tip of the Izu Peninsula can be visited as a day trip from Tokyo as it is a 3-4 hours drive. Mikomotojima, an uninhabited island about 11km off the coast of Shimoda, is now extremely popular with divers from both Japan and abroad, as it is a place where you can encounter schools of hammerhead sharks.
