Deep-sea fish, jellynose fish, has appeared in Osezaki, a popular dive site in Japan, for the first time in 30 years!

We received some surprising information from Osezaki in west coast of Izu peninsula! The information was provided by Murai Tomoomi of Diving Service Murai. He said that a very rare deep-sea fish, jellynose fish (Ateleopus tanabensis), appeared and he was able to take photos and videos of it.

Below are Mr. Murai’s comments.

“On January 31, 2026, I miraculously spotted a deep-sea fish, jellynose fish (Ateleopus tanabensis), for the first time in 30 years at a depth of 23 meters off Cape Osezaki in the Izu Peninsula. It was about 30 cm in size, and drifted in a strange atmosphere, slowly wriggling its body just above the sand. This fish usually lives at depths of 100 to 600 meters, and its body is made of gelatin, so it is completely transparent, and you can clearly see its internal organs and what appears to be its brain. Its eyes are white, and its pectoral and dorsal fins are uniquely shaped and never close but are always spread out as it swims.

About 30 years ago, there was a time when jellynose could be observed every day for about a week in East Izu on the Izu Peninsula (incidentally, the Izu earthquake swarm occurred a few days after that). This is the second time since then.

At the time, camera equipment and underwater lights hadn’t advanced enough to capture beautiful underwater footage, but 30 years have passed and the equipment has evolved, so I was able to capture it well this time and I’m happy that I was able to leave a good record of the footage. I would like to continue capturing various mysterious underwater scenes from all over the world.”

Osezaki, known as a diving mecca, is located on the west coast of the Izu Peninsula and is about 2.5 hour drive from central Tokyo, or about an hour by bus from the nearest train station, Numazu. Why not go diving at Osezaki now and discover some fascinating creatures?
